UPDATE: The accident victim has been identified as Joyce Koven Smith, a resident of Cardiff by the Sea.
Carlsbad CA— Shortly after 10:00am this morning, March 16, 2016 Carlsbad Police and Firefighters responded to reports of a bicyclist struck by a vehicle in the 4600 block of Carlsbad Blvd., between Sequoia Avenue and Tierra Del Oro Street.
Officers found that a 59-year-old female bicyclist traveling southbound in the bike lane had, for an unknown reason, swerved into the number one lane of travel and was struck by a Ford Fiesta driven by a 64-year-old female motorist also driving southbound on Carlsbad Boulevard.
Tragically, the bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the vehicle is not thought to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
The investigation into the collision is ongoing.
The Medical Examiner’s Office will identity and release information on the bicyclist once notifications have been made.
