Carlsbad CA— This afternoon, March 17, 2016 at approximately 2:48 PM, the City of Carlsbad Police Department received a 9-1-1 call from an 11 year-old girl who told dispatchers her mother needed help at their residence in the southern portion of the city of Carlsbad.
The girl told dispatch her mother had failed to pick her up after school. When the girl called her mother, the mother told her to call police and not come home. Approximately ten minutes later, the girl arrived home and witnessed a male assaulting her mother. The girl called dispatch and said her mother had a broken leg and needed help.
Patrol officers and Carlsbad Fire Department paramedics responded and found the victim with multiple injuries. The victim identified her attacker as her former boyfriend, 31 year-old Michael Carabajal. The victim stated Carabajal had forcibly held her against her will, choked her into unconsciousness, and raped her. During the attack, the victim also suffered a broken leg. The victim was transported to a hospital and admitted for treatment of her injuries.
Detectives responded to process the crime scene and conduct an investigation. During surveillance, the suspect was located in the 7800 block of Calle Mejor.
Carabajal was taken into custody without incident. He is expected to be booked into Vista Jail on the following charges: attempted murder, rape, kidnap, stalking, residential burglary, false imprisonment, assault with a deadly weapon, and battery with serious bodily injury.
