Carlsbad CA— On Thursday, April 7 at 6:51pm the City of Carlsbad Police Department received a call to assist California State Parks Police on a traffic collision wherein the driver of the vehicle was still inside the vehicle and was being held at gunpoint by California State Parks Police Officers on Carlsbad Boulevard south of Avenida Encinas.
Upon arrival Carlsbad Police Officers located a white Ford E350 van which had collided into a tree on the east curb line of south bound traffic on Carlsbad Boulevard south of Avenida Encinas. California State Parks Police Officers had the driver of the vehicle at gunpoint and were communicating with him from their police vehicle.
The California State Parks Police Officers communicated to Carlsbad Police Officers that they heard the collision from their office and responded to provide assistance. When they contacted the driver of the vehicle he communicated incoherently with them and attempted to move his vehicle against their orders whereupon they retreated to their police vehicle for safety.
California State Parks Police Officers and Carlsbad Police Officers attempted for over three hours to convince the driver of the vehicle to voluntarily exit the vehicle however he refused. Carlsbad Police Officers ultimately forcibly removed the driver of the vehicle from the vehicle and took him into custody.
The driver of the vehicle was identified as 37 year-old Kirk Hansen of Encinitas. He was arrested for felony hit-and-run as well as driving under the influence and booked into Vista Jail.
