MiraCosta to Hold Myriad of Activities to Mark Sexual Assault Awareness Month

MiraCosta+to+Hold+Myriad+of+Activities+to+Mark+Sexual+Assault+Awareness+Month

Oceanside CA— April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and the MiraCosta College student club NAMI On Campus (National Alliance on Mental Illness) is hosting several activities to raise awareness of this type of assault.
The National Violence Against Women Prevention Research Center at the Medical University of South Carolina estimates that potentially 3.8 million women in the U.S. suffer from rape-related PTSD, many of whom do not speak up due to the stigma associated with it. NAMI is sponsoring these events in an effort to assist those victims who may feel unsupported within our community.

The Clothesline Project

This free interactive activity allows participants to paint a T-shirt with a personal message speaking out against sexual violence. The Clothesline Project will be held April 13, 6–8 p.m. at the lobby/atrium at the Community Learning Center, located 1831 Mission Avenue, Oceanside;

April 14

near the San Elijo Campus clock tower and lawn area, located, 3333 Manchester Avenue, Cardiff; and April 11–15, noon–2 p.m. at the hub Fountain area on the Oceanside Campus, 1 Barnard Drive, Oceanside.


Healthy Relationships & Bystander Intervention Student Workshop

April 19, San Elijo Campus
6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Student Center Conference Room.


Sexual Assault Awareness Rally

April 19, Oceanside Campus
3–5 p.m., Concert Hall; Keynote speaker: Erin Merryn, the force behind Erin’s Law, author of Stolen Innocence, Living for Today and An Unimaginable Act.


Community Resource Fair and Take Back The Night Event

April 20, Community Learning Center
Fair (6-8 p.m.) highlights community providers in North County
Take Back The Night Event (7-8:30 p.m.) features the Performance Writer’s Club, survivor’s spotlight, and candlelight vigil.


Denim Day

April 28, Oceanside Campus
11 a.m.–2 p.m. Hub/fountain area; Denim Day is an international day of protest against sexual assault when individuals are asked to wear jeans in support of survivors, and to raise awareness about misconceptions that surround sexual assault.
