San Marcos CA— Last night, Thursday, May 12, 2016, at approximately 10:45pm., a California Highway Patrol (CHP) Sergeant from the Oceanside Area observed a gray Toyota Corolla on the off-ramp from eastbound State Route 78 to Nordahl Road, within the City of San Marcos.
The vehicle matched the description of a vehicle reported by a citizen driving erratically on the freeway; the driver was suspected of possibly being under the influence of alcohol and/or a drug(s).
After the vehicle’s driver failed to stop for a red traffic signal light, the Sergeant attempted an enforcement stop. The driver failed to yield, and a pursuit ensued.
During the pursuit, the driver was involved in a minor, single-vehicle traffic collision, yet she continued to flee.
She reached speeds of approximately 80 miles per hour and she failed to stop for several red traffic signal lights and a stop sign.
The pursuit ended as the vehicle traveled through a convenience store parking lot on San Marcos Boulevard, near Grand Avenue, where the Sergeant performed a pursuit intervention technique (PIT).
The driver refused repeated orders from CHP Officers and San Diego County Sheriffs Deputies to exit the vehicle. Consequently, a CHP Officer shattered one of the vehicle’s windows using less-lethal (bean-bag) shotgun rounds, and a service canine from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department was deployed into the vehicle.
The canine made contact with the driver, and she was subsequently taken into custody without further incident.
The driver was identified as Sandra Ruiz, a 33-year-old San Marcos resident. She was transported to Palomar Medical Center, in Escondido, where she was treated for minor bite wounds. Upon her release from the Hospital, she will be booked at the Vista Detention Facility for reckless evasion, driving under the combined influence of alcohol and drugs, hit-and-run, and resisting arrest.
