Oceanside CA— MiraCosta College associate instructors and union officers Krista Warren and Al Nyman each received awards at a statewide Community College Association (CCA) Conference held in April in Costa Mesa.
Warren, coordinator of the college’s noncredit program, also serves as the president of the MiraCosta College Associate Faculty Union. She received the “WHO” award, which stands for “we honor our own,” an annual award given to an outstanding member of a local union. Also of note, Warren was elected to the CCA Board to represent District I–2, which includes union and faculty representation for MiraCosta, Southwestern, Ranch Santiago and Imperial Valley colleges.
Nyman, a criminal justice instructor and union vice president, received the Mary Ann Pacheco Ethnic Minority Award for his 39 years of service to the community and to the union. He has volunteered one day each week for ten years at the Tri-City Hospital Medical Lab. He was also a founding member of the Carlsbad Juvenile Justice Program, which helps young first offenders and targets crime prevention. The award is named for a trustee at Rio Hondo Community College, a retired English and ethnic studies professor who helped establish the first national Chicano Literature Festival.
The MiraCosta College Academic Associate Faculty Union is a chapter of the Community College Association (CCA)—the higher education affiliate of the California Teachers Association (CTA). CTA comes under the umbrella of the National Education Association (NEA).
