Oceanside CA— This afternoon, September 26, 2016 at approximately 3:05 pm a 24 year-old female from Escondido stopped her 2006 Mazda 6 in the center divide on southbound I-5 just north of SR-78.
Shortly after stopping, her passenger exited the vehicle and began walking in the center divide looking for coins she previously observed on a community service detail (trash pickup) with Cal Trans.
At the same time a 41 year old-male from El Cajon was driving his 2016 Toyota 4 Runner southbound on I-5. For reasons still under investigation he lost control of his vehicle and veered into the center divide where he collided with the female pedestrian later identified as a 21 year-old female from Escondido.
The pedestrian was transported to Scripps La Jolla where she was later pronounced dead. There were no other injuries.
DUI is not suspected in this collision. The incident remains under investigation.
