10-16 foot waves possible on Friday

San Diego County CA— A Beach Hazard statement has been upgraded to a High Surf Warning for San Diego County and Orange County beaches from 4:00pm Thursday, January 19, 2017 through 10:00pm, Tuesday January 24, 2017. A high surf warning indicates that dangerous, battering waves will pound the shoreline. This will result in very dangerous swimming conditions and deadly rip currents.
High surf will create very hazardous swimming conditions to the beaches Thursday through Tuesday. High surf can suddenly wash people off jetties and rocks. In addition, large and potentially damaging surf will be possible Friday through Saturday and again Monday into Tuesday creating the potential for coastal erosion and coastal flooding with possible damage to coastal structures such as piers. Coastal flooding will be most likely during times of high tide. Frequent strong rip currents are also likely.
A series of strong pacific storm systems will generate high surf conditions at the beaches beginning Thursday then even larger and damaging surf Friday and Saturday. Surf will lower slightly on Sunday then increase again Monday into Tuesday.
Damaging surf causing coastal erosion and flooding will be possible mainly Friday Through Saturday. Surf will lower by the middle of next week.
High surf, around 7 feet, developing late Thursday afternoon then increasing on Friday to 10 to 16 feet. Surf subsiding on Sunday to 4 to 8 ft then increasing again on Monday to 9 to 12 ft. Surf will slowly lower throughout the day Tuesday.
Highest tide during highest surf will be at 4:35 am on Saturday.
