Oceanside CA— This afternoon, February 5, 2017 at approximately 1:25pm, the Oceanside Police Department responded to an apartment complex in the 500 block of N. Freeman for a reported disturbance with gunshots being fired from within one of the apartment units.

OPD Officers arrived on scene and could hear continued gunfire, specifically shotgun blasts from inside the apartment. Evacuations were conducted of other nearby units as officers attempted to contain the target apartment residence.
Information was received from witnesses on scene that the occupant of the apartment and the person discharging the firearms was 63-year-old Oceanside resident, Robert Bredeweg. It was learned that Bredeweg was alone in the apartment and was possibly despondent over a family issue.
The Oceanside Police Department’s SWAT Team and Crisis Negotiations Team (CNT) were requested.
At approximately 4:30pm, CNT personnel were able to persuade Bredeweg to come outside where he was safely taken into custody by SWAT personnel.
There were no injuries to anyone reported during the incident.
Bredeweg will be booked into the Vista Detention Facility assault with a deadly weapon and multiple counts of negligently discharging a firearm.
