Final Meeting to Adopt OUSD Election District Maps – June 26

Oceanside CA— At a special meeting on Monday, June 26, the Oceanside Unified School District (OUSD) Board of Education will adopt a voting district map and a sequencing plan. The meeting will take place at 6 p.m. in the OUSD District Board Room located 2111 Mission Avenue in Oceanside. All map options can be viewed at www.oside.us or at the OUSD District Office.
“We held multiple meetings during this process to ensure that we obtained ample community input,” said Board of Education President Robert “Camo” Gleisberg. “The adopted map will reflect the perspective of our students, staff, and community.”
On April 28, the Board of Education voted to transition from at-large elections to by-district elections in accordance with the California Voting Rights Act (CVRA). Currently, OUSD board members are elected by voters from across the entire school district. In a by-district election system, the school district will be divided into sections, or voting districts, and voters from each section will elect one person who lives in that section to fill a seat on the board.
The CVRA is intended to prevent dilution of the influence of minority voters. School district compliance with the CVRA is most often accomplished by creating voting districts in such a way that some of them contain a higher percentage of minority voters than the school district as a whole.
