UPDATE-4:45am: Arson suspected to be cause of fire
Oceanside CA— Shortly after 1:15pm this afternoon, people playing golf at the Oceanside Golf Course, 825 Douglas Drive, called 9-1-1 to report a fire just west of the golf course. The first arriving units reported that the fire was burning in heavy grass/brush, burning up the slope behind the golf course at a rapid rate of spread due to the 12-15 mph winds. The fire was well established with approximately 2 acres involved and growing quickly. Since the fire perimeter appeared to boarder Camp Pendleton, resources entered into a unified command and quickly established a direct attack to slow the progress of the fire. Additional strike teams of engine companies were also added to protect the Pilgrim Creek Estates community and residents were advised to shelter in place. A voluntary evacuation location was created at the community center for any additional needs residents in the area may have.

Air attack resources were slowed due to a drone flying in the area. Once the condition was cleared, helicopters using water drops slowed the forward progress of the fire moving toward the Pilgrim Creek community. This allowed for crews working around the perimeter to safely bring the fire under control.
A suspect was detained for questioning and although the cause of the fire is still being investigated, an arson fire appears likely. One firefighter was transported for minor injuries to Tri-City Medical center.
It took crews approximately 3 hours to control the wild fire; however 100 percent containment will not be expected until mid-day. Crews will continue to mop-up hotspots and patrol the area throughout the night. Crews will continue to work in the area and remain optimistic that full containment will be completed around mid-day today.
