By-District Election Map Adopted by Board of Education

Oceanside CA— At a special meeting Monday night, the Oceanside Unified School District (OUSD) Board of Education adopted a voting district map and a sequencing plan. The adopted map was approved by a 3 to 2 vote and can be viewed at www.oside.us.
On April 28, the Board of Education voted to transition from at-large elections to by-district elections in accordance with the California Voting Rights Act (CVRA). Currently, OUSD board members are elected by voters from across the entire school district. In a by-district election system, the school district will be divided into sections, or voting districts, and voters from each section will elect one person who lives in that section to fill a seat on the board.
OUSD will submit the adopted district election map to the San Diego County Office of Education. If approved by the County Office, the map and election process will go to the California Board of Education to request an election waiver. If approved, the new election process will begin in 2018.
The CVRA is intended to prevent dilution of the influence of minority voters. School district compliance with the CVRA is most often accomplished by creating voting districts in such a way that some of them contain a higher percentage of minority voters than the school district as a whole.
