Oceanside CA— On Tuesday, September 5, 2017, at 11:03 am, the Oceanside Police Department responded to calls of a vehicle collision in the intersection of SR-76 and Old Grove Rd.
The collision occurred when vehicle #1, a 2001 Mercedes Benz, traveling westbound on SR-76, was approaching Old Grove Rd. The Mercedes pulled into the left turn lane which at the time had a red arrow. The Mercedes failed to stop for the red light and made a left turn from SR-76 westbound to southbound Old Grove Rd. Vehicle #2, a 2017 Hino Commercial vehicle, was eastbound on SR-76, approaching a green light at Old Grove Rd., entered the intersection on the green light and the two vehicles collided.
The driver of the Mercedes has been identified as 85-year-old William Tiernan of Fallbrook. He was transported to Scripps Hospital via Air Ambulance with multiple severe injuries. Tiernan passed away on Thursday, September 7 as a result of the injuries he sustained. His family was by his side.
The driver of the commercial vehicle and his passengers all had minor injuries and remained on scene.
The investigation is ongoing and alcohol was not a factor in the collision.
