Oceanside CA— The MiraCosta Community College District, along with Kitchell Capital Expenditure Managers (CEM), the program management firm for Measure MM, is pleased to announce the design phase is underway for the first two projects to be modernized under the $455 million general obligation bond, approved by voters in November 2016.
Both modernization projects support facility upgrades at the district’s San Elijo Campus, a nearly 30-year-old campus situated on 42 acres facing the San Elijo Lagoon in Cardiff.
The modernizations involve Building 600 (B-600), which currently houses a wide-range of English, humanities, and social science classes for students to complete university transfer requirements and fulfill requirement certification. Building 300 (B-300), an eight-classroom building, supports instruction for a variety of courses from international languages to micro-economics. Both modernizations, designed by architects Mosher Drew, will include full classroom modernizations, upgrades to the electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and technology systems, and improvements to exterior finishes.
The projects are being implemented via the traditional design-bid-build delivery method, allowing the district to contract separate entities for the design and construction of a project, and are scheduled to be fully constructed within two years. The overall project budget for the B-600 is $2.2 million; B-300’s modernization is also budgeted at $2.2 million.
Prior to the Measure MM passage, it had been more than 50 years since voters approved a bond to repair or improve facilities at the MiraCosta College campuses. Measure MM is expected to fund the construction of nearly a dozen new, state-of-the-art academic, student support, and career training facilities; more than 30 building renovations and modernization projects; and nearly three dozen infrastructure, landscape, parking, and site-based improvement projects at its two main campuses and satellite Community Learning Center.
