Carlsbad CA—The City of Carlsbad has named Fire Department veteran Michael D. Calderwood as its new fire chief, a role he has prepared for with more than two decades of service in positions of increasing leadership.
Fire Chief Mike Davis announced his retirement earlier this year. The exact date of the transition will be determined shortly, once a transition plan is developed, according to City Manager Kevin Crawford.
Calderwood began his career in the City of Pismo Beach as a firefighter/EMT and joined the City of Carlsbad Fire Department in 2003. He most recently served as a division chief.
Calderwood has served in roles including executive leadership, resource management, labor/management relations, emergency planning, professional standards, mentoring and employee wellness. In 2017 he graduated from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government’s Senior Executives in State and Local Governments Program. He is also a 2013 graduate of LEAD San Diego. He completed his formal education at the University of California, Santa Barbara, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in law and society.
