Southbound I-5 Closure Tonight-June 5

Southbound+I-5+Closure+Tonight-June+5

San Diego CA— June 5, at 11 p.m. to Wednesday morning, June 6, at 5 a.m., all southbound lanes of Interstate 5 in the University City and La Jolla areas will be shut down from the Interstate 805 merge to Gilman Drive while construction crews continue to build a column for the Mid-Coast Trolley project in the center divider.
Motorists heading southbound on I-5 will be detoured via I-805 during the overnight closure.
Entrances onto I-5 from Genesee Avenue, La Jolla Village Drive, and Nobel Drive will be closed. Motorists are advised to plan ahead and seek alternative routes.
The closure will allow crews to construct a support column in the center divider of the freeway just south of Nobel Drive for the future Trolley bridge that will span I-5.
Crews positioned a 155-foot-long rebar cage into a bored hole in the center divider of the freeway and poured concreate into the cage to solidify the column.
Tonight, the heavy equipment and machinery used to build the column will be safely moved across to the southbound side of the freeway during the overnight closures.
Traffic controls and detour signs are in place to alert motorists of the upcoming closures.
The Mid-Coast Trolley project will extend Blue Line Trolley service 11 miles north from the Old Town Transit Center to the University City community, serving major activity centers such as Mission Bay Park, the VA Medical Center, UC San Diego, and Westfield University Town Center mall.
Mid-Coast Trolley construction began in fall 2016 and service is anticipated to begin in fall 2021. The current budget is $2.1 billion, which includes financing costs. The project is funded through the TransNet half-cent sales tax and the Federal Transit Administration.
