Bonsall CA— Early this morning, August 8, 2018 at approximately 2:23, a 20-year old-male, identified as Christian Avila-Ramos of San Marcos, was driving a Nissan Sentra eastbound on East Vista Way, west of Gopher Canyon Road. A California Highway Patrol Officer in the area observed the vehicle commit numerous traffic violations. including violations for speed, following too closely and failing to dim lights to traffic.
The officer initiated an enforcement stop and the vehicle fled at speeds as high as 70 miles per hour. Less than a mile into the pursuit, the vehicle failed to stop for the red light at the intersection with State Route 76 and struck a Hyundai Sonata and Toyota Corolla that were traveling westbound on SR-76 within the intersection.
The driver of the Nissan Sentra, Christian Avila-Ramos, sustained major injuries during the collision and was transported to Palomar Medical Center. Mr. Avalos-Ramos had four passengers within his vehicle when he fled and crashed. All of the passengers within the Nissan sustained injuries. A 19-year-old female from San Marcos, sustained major injuries and was transported by air ambulance to Scripps Memorial Hospital, La Jolla. A 19-year-old female from San Marcos sustained minor to moderate injuries and was transported to Palomar Medical Center.
The remaining passengers, a 19-year-old male from Oceanside, and a 18-year-old male from San Marcos, sustained minor injuries and declined medical transport.
Mr. Avila-Ramos was determined to under the influence of alcohol and drugs at the time of this incident and was arrested for felony DUI, felony evading, and felony evading causing injury.
The driver of the Hyundai Sonata, a 65-year-old male from Escondido sustained minor to moderate injuries.
