Removal of the Wooden Falsework Begins Across All Lanes of Traffic

San Diego CA— From Sunday, September 23, at 9:30 p.m. through Monday, September 24, at 5 a.m. all southbound and northbound lanes of Interstate 5(I-5) will be closed as crews begin the process to remove the wooden falsework support structure along the newly-constructed Gilman Drive Bridge.
Traffic controls and detour signs have been placed to alert motorists in advance. During this initial phase to remove falsework, the public will see little difference in the project. The falsework is expected to be completely removed in the coming weeks.
“The removal of the supporting falsework is a vital step in our progress toward opening the new bridge.” said Jim Linthicum, SANDAG Director of Mobility Management and Project Implementation. “Once this is complete, our crews will be able to finish work on and below the bridge over the next few months. This bridge will link the west and east campuses of UC San Diego.”
Southbound I-5 will be fully closed, from the Interstate 5/Interstate 805 split to La Jolla Village Drive:

  • Sunday, September 23, from 9:30 p.m. to Monday, September 24, at 5 a.m.
  • Southbound motorists will be detoured via I-805.

Northbound I-5 will be fully closed, from La Jolla Village Drive to Voigt Drive:

  • Sunday, September 23, from 9:30 p.m. to Monday, September 24, at 5 a.m.
  • Northbound motorists will be detoured via Interstate 8, State Route 52, and the La Jolla Village Drive ramps.

Work on the Gilman Drive Bridge began in late 2016. It spans Interstate 5 near Gilman Drive on the west side of I-5 and will connect to Medical Center Drive on the east side of I-5. The new bridge will connect the east and west campus of UC San Diego. The bridge is expected to open early next year.
