New Bridge Spanning Over I-5 to be Unveiled in the Coming Months

San Diego CA— Hidden behind a large wooden support structure for more than a year, the new Gilman Drive Bridge over Interstate 5 (I-5) will soon be unveiled following a series of highway overnight closures over the next two weekends.
The scheduled closures are necessary in order to remove the temporary wooden structures (also known as falsework) used to support the Gilman Drive Bridge during construction.
Starting Sunday, October 21 and running through, Thursday, November 1, a series of temporary overnight closures are scheduled to take place on southbound I-5.
Motorists should plan to take alternate routes to avoid potential congestion, as significant delays are expected during these closures.

The closures are planned for

Sunday, October 21, through Thursday, October 25:

• Full closure of I-5 southbound lanes from the I-5 and Interstate 805 (I-805) interchange to La Jolla Village Drive
• Work hours are 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night, unless noted otherwise

Sunday, October 28, through Thursday, November 1:

• Full closure of I-5 southbound lanes from the I-5 and I-805 interchange to La Jolla Village Drive
• Work hours are 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night, unless noted otherwise

SANDAG, in partnership with Caltrans, and UC San Diego, are constructing the bridge over I-5 at Gilman Drive, just north of the La Jolla Village Drive interchange. Construction of the bridge started in November 2016.
The bridge and related roadway improvements will connect Gilman Drive to the west and Medical Center Drive to the east, a vital campus link for UC San Diego. The new bridge will add a second on-campus crossing over I-5.

The Gilman Drive Bridge is being constructed concurrently with the Mid-Coast Trolley Blue Line extension.
The Mid-Coast Trolley Project will extend Blue Line Trolley service from Old Town north to the University City community, serving major activity centers such as Mission Bay Park, the VA Medical Center, UC San Diego, and Westfield UTC.
