San Diego CA— Hidden behind a large wooden support structure for more than a year, the new Gilman Drive Bridge over Interstate 5 (I-5) will soon be unveiled following the last two weeks of a series of overnight highway closures beginning Sunday.
The scheduled closures will be necessary in order to remove the temporary wooden structures (also known as falsework) used to support the Gilman Drive Bridge during construction. About half of the wooden structure has already been removed.
Starting Sunday, November 4 and running through, Thursday, November 15, a series of temporary overnight closures are scheduled to take place on northbound I-5.
Motorists should plan to take alternate routes to avoid potential congestion, as significant delays are expected during these closures.

The overnight closures are planned for

Sunday, November 4, through Thursday, November 8:

  • Full closure of I-5 northbound lanes from La Jolla Village Drive to Genesee Avenue
  • Work hours are 10:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night, unless noted otherwise

Tuesday, November 13, through Thursday, November 15:

  • Full closure of I-5 northbound lanes from La Jolla Village Drive to Genesee Avenue
  • Work hours are 10:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night, unless noted otherwise

*These closures are subject to change and additional closures may be scheduled.
SANDAG, in partnership with Caltrans and UC San Diego, is constructing the bridge over I-5 at Gilman Drive, just north of the La Jolla Village Drive interchange. Construction of the bridge started in November 2016.
The bridge and related roadway improvements will connect Gilman Drive to the west and Medical Center Drive to the east, a vital campus link for UC San Diego. The new bridge will add a second on-campus crossing over I-5.

The Gilman Drive Bridge is being constructed concurrently with the Mid-Coast Trolley Blue Line extension.
The Mid-Coast Trolley Project will extend Blue Line Trolley service from Old Town north to the University City community, serving major activity centers such as Mission Bay Park, the VA Medical Center, UC San Diego, and Westfield UTC. Nine new stations will be constructed. Major construction work began in 2016, with service anticipated to begin in 2021. To learn more, visit KeepSanDiegoMoving.com/MidCoast.
