Suspect arrested and booked into the Vista Detention Facility for attempted murder of a peace officer

Encinitas CA— On December 15, 2018, at about 2:36 pm, the Sheriff’s Communications Center received several reports of a white male on a ladder hitting the red light cameras with a baseball bat at the intersection of North El Camino Real and Encinitas Boulevard in the city of Encinitas. At the same time, a Sheriff’s deputy was driving by and saw the suspect hitting the camera. The deputy stopped his vehicle and made contact with the suspect.
As the deputy was standing next to the suspect, he ordered him to stop and drop the baseball bat. The suspect turned around and he refused to comply with the deputy’s order. The deputy attempted to incapacitate the suspect with his Department issued Taser Conducted Energy Device (CED), but it malfunctioned. The suspect then swung the baseball bat at the deputy in an attempt to hit him several times.
The deputy transitioned to his baton and hit the suspect in an attempt to subdue him. A short foot pursuit ensued westbound on Encinitas Boulevard onto the Shell gas station parking lot that is on the southwest corner of the intersection. When the deputy caught up to the suspect, he turned around and attacked the deputy and a physical altercation between them ensued.
Other deputies arrived on scene and the suspect was ultimately detained and handcuffed.
The suspect was maximally restrained with a WRAP restraint device and was transported to Scripps La Jolla for treatment before being booked into the Vista Detention Facility.
During the incident, a deputy was transported to Scripps Encinitas, where he was treated for multiple fractures.
The suspect was identified as Frederick Gramcko, age 53. Gramcko was arrested and booked into the Vista Detention Facility for attempted murder of a peace officer.
