UPDATE: A Third person involved in this collision has passed away after arriving at the hospital
Oceanside CA— At approximately 12:55pm this afternoon, February 5, 2019, a 9-1-1 call was received for a vehicle accident with major damage and passengers ejected in the intersection located at the 1200 block of S. Coast Hwy at Oceanside Blvd. A fire department Vehicle Rescue Response was dispatched to the scene and arrived in just two minutes. Battalion 217 arrived first, receiving the alarm just a few blocks away confirming two vehicles collided at the intersection of Coast Hwy and Oceanside Blvd .
Additional resources were ordered to handle the extrication of two trapped victims. A total of three additional ambulances and two Air Ambulances were added to provide rapid transport for the multiple patients who were critically injured.
The collision occurred as a 2007 Toyota Tacoma truck, traveling southbound on Coast Hwy., failed to stop for a red light and collided with a 2003 Mazda sedan traveling eastbound on Oceanside Blvd on a green light. The collision caused the Mazda to spin around violently causing two of its rear seat passengers to be ejected from the car onto the roadway. The Toyota truck stopped just south of the intersection.
Emergency personnel arrived on scene within minutes and attended to the victims of the Mazda. Two of the rear seat passengers were declared deceased on scene, one of the ejected passengers was transported to the hospital where she passed a short time later. All three victims were adult females. The other three victims, two males and a female, from the Mazda were transported to area hospitals with serious injuries, but are expected to survive.
The driver of the Toyota was evaluated on scene by medics and released. The driver, identified as 19-year-old Mason Fish, was evaluated on scene by officers and was later arrested for Driving under the influence of a controlled substance.
The investigation is still ongoing. The names of the deceased are being withheld pending the notification of next of kin.
A total of six victims were traveling in the same vehicle. Four patients were transported; two to Scripps La Jolla Medical Center, one patient to Rady Children’s Hospital and one patient taken to Tri-City Medical Center. An additional Oceanside Fire Deputy Chief was added to the incident to handle Air Operations and both air ambulance helicopters were landed on Coast Hwy, just south of the accident scene.
