Three Residents, One Firefighter Injured

More than 30 people displaced by the fire

Oceanside CA— The Oceanside Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a structure fire at 1409 Division Street at 2:09pm., Saturday, April 6, 2019. Responding units arrived on scene and found heavy fire from two buildings with a third beginning to burn. A second alarm was quickly called, then a third subsequent alarm was necessary to assist. First responders were also made aware of multiple burn victims, two of whom were assessed and transported to UCSD Hospital Burn Center. A third was assessed and released at the scene.

The fire originated in a single family residence with an additional two dwelling units built as additions. The fire was driven by wind to ignite the nearby two story apartment building with six dwellings.  A total of three buildings and nine dwelling units were damaged by fire.
Due to the hard work of on scene units, forward progress of the fire was quickly halted. Full fire control took an extended period of time due to the extent of fire, the fire’s location in the attic of the two main dwellings, and large amounts of combustibles inside and outside of the buildings. Investigators performed an initial evaluation of the scene and will continue to perform interviews in the coming days. Official cause and origin are yet to be determined.
At one point in the fire, every Oceanside Fire Department engine and ladder truck, and three out of five rescue ambulances were committed. A total of 78 firefighters battled the blaze. Mutual aid was provided by Fire Departments from Carlsbad, Vista, Encinitas, North County Fire Protection District and San Marcos with assistance from Red Cross, Oceanside Neighborhood Services and the Oceanside Police Department.
Victims of the fire were assisted with lodging and emergency needs by the Red Cross and the Oceanside Neighborhood Services Department.
One firefighter suffered a minor injury not requiring treatment at a medical facility.
