Closures will shift to northbound lanes on Tuesday, June 18

San Diego CAA series of temporary overnight closures of southbound Interstate 5 (I-5) lanes began on Sunday, June 9, for crews to remove and install falsework, the temporary wooden structures used to support the future Mid-Coast Trolley bridge during construction.
Crews are removing falsework from the recently constructed overcrossing at Voigt Drive and installing falsework south of Nobel Drive for the second Trolley overcrossing. Both overcrossings will span I-5, allowing the Trolley to cross the freeway at two different points along its route.
The southbound closures were scheduled to finish on June 28 but work has progressed ahead of schedule. The final two southbound closures for this work will continue on Sunday, June 16, and Monday, June 17, from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night.
Starting Tuesday, June 18, a series of full northbound closures from State Route 52 to Genesee Avenue are set to begin to continue falsework removal.
Full northbound I-5 closures are scheduled as follows:

  • Tuesday, June 18, through Thursday, June 20, from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night
  • Sunday, June 23, through Thursday, June 27, from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night
  • Detour routes will be available via eastbound SR 52 and northbound Interstate 805

*Schedules are subject to change
The Mid-Coast Trolley Project will extend Blue Line Trolley service from Old Town Transit Center to the University community, serving major activity centers such as Mission Bay, the VA Medical Center, UC San Diego, and University Towne Centre. Nine new stations will be constructed. Major construction work began in 2016, with service anticipated to begin in late 2021.
