Oceanside CA— Sunday afternoon, October 27, 2019 at 12:45, Oceanside Fire Engine E211 responded to a smoke check in the Captistrano Neighborhood of Oceanside. On arrival they found a small brush fire burning in the river bottom.

They upgraded the incident to a full brush fire response. E211 began a hose-lay down a steep embankment to access the fire, which was moving slowly in thick vegetation. Other units arrived shortly after and began assisting with the hose-lay and getting access to the fire. Oceanside Police Department provided assistance and evacuated several homes on the ridge.
Forward progress was stopped at 3:43pm. However a small spot fire ignited on the slope leading to the homes off San Juan Street. Additional engines were dispatched to provide structure defense to the neighborhood. The spot fire was quickly caught from the crews climbing up the slope and the fire was fully extinguished and mopped up.
There were no injuries to any residents or firefighters on this incident and no structures were damaged. The cause of the fire is from a large homeless encampment in the area.
Units from Camp Pendleton, Carlsbad, Vista fire departments provided assistance on this incident.
