Oceanside CA— Just after 2:45pm on Friday November 1, 2019, units from the Oceanside Fire Department responded to a reported vegetation fire on Sleeping Indian Road and Las Tunas Dr., in Oceanside.
On arrival E215 encountered heavy black smoke coming from the yard of 661 Sleeping Indian Road. E215 determined that a large RV was on fire and was catching several other RVs on fire. The fire was also extending into the brush on the property and into roughly a dozen cars also located on site. Access was restricted with several gates and chain link fences and there was no fire hydrant nearby. E215 upgraded the assignment and added several more resources, including water tenders to provide an adequate water supply for the prolonged firefight.
County Hazmat and Camp Pendleton Hazmat units also responded to the incident as reports of previous drug activity on the property were relayed to the incident commander. That information coupled with the RVs and potential for fuel and propane necessitated the call for Hazmat. Fortunately, Hazmat did not find any indication of hazardous materials on site.
The fire was declared under control with all forward progress stopped at 4:15pm.
The Oceanside Water Department brought in a backhoe and other heavy equipment to help move the burned-out vehicles to assist crews with putting out hot spots in the yard. Crews continued to work on the burning debris until roughly 8:15pm at which point crews returned to the stations for the evening.
An Oceanside Fire Department unit will remain on scene throughout the night to provide a fire watch. Crews will return tomorrow morning to complete the final overhaul of the burning debris.
No firefighters were injured during the incident and one citizen with minor burns was transported to Palomar Hospital for evaluation and treatment.
Mutual Aid was provided by Camp Pendleton Fire Department, North County Fire Department, Vista Fire Department, Rancho Santa Fe Fire Department and San Diego City Fire Department
