Oceanside CA— Boys & Girls Clubs of Oceanside (BGCO) received $1,000 from The Union Bank Foundation to grow and expand the STREAMing Ahead Program.
Six years ago, BGCO implemented STREAMing Ahead, a Science, Technology, Research, Engineering, Arts, and Math program to help our youth develop a greater interest in these fields. The program aims to inspire academic success and career interest in the area of STREAM.
BGCO collaborates with STEM Ecosystem, Genentech, Biocom Women in Aviation, Solutions Farms Aquaponics and other community businesses to provide hands-on, meaningful experiences. Each of these partners gives youth real life examples of STREAM in action to spark their interest and become inspired by people working in the field.
Over the summer, as part of a hands-on learning experience, members adventured out to the USS Midway and Star of India, learning about maritime history. They went whale watching and deep sea fishing and for many this was their first experience on a boat. They challenged each other during an “Egg Drop Challenge,” learning about gravity, force and acceleration, competing to design a container that would allow an egg to safely fall from varying heights without breaking.
“Thanks to community supporters like Union Bank, we are able to open up a whole new world to our youth,” said Jodi Diamond, CEO. “With this funding, we will have more opportunities to ensure each member has a chance to learn and explore STREAM education.”
