Update-12/27/19: The suspect in this incident has been identified as 59 year-old Robert Dean. On December 24, 2019, Robert succumbed to his injuries and was declared deceased by hospital staff. The Medical Examiner’s office performed an autopsy on December 26, 2019. Robert’s cause of death has been ruled as a gunshot wound and the manner of death, a homicide.
The victim in this incident has been identified as 80 year-old Barbara Miller. Barbara’s husband (Robert’s step-father) has been identified as 74 year-old William Miller.
Encinitas CA— On December 23, 2019 at 5:43am, the Sheriff’s Department received a phone call for help from a female at a residence in the 1200 block of Greenlake Dr., in Encinitas. The initial report was that the female’s adult son, who is in his fifties, threatened her with a knife.

The female screamed for help and her husband came to her aid. Upon seeing the son threatening his mother with the knife, the husband armed himself with a gun and shot the son. Deputies and paramedics arrived and the son was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.
The mother, who is in her seventies, was not injured. The father, who is also in his seventies, is being questioned by detectives about this incident.
This is an isolated incident and there is no danger to the community.
