Carlsbad CA— The nominating period for two Carlsbad City Council seats up for election Nov. 3 starts July 13, at 8 a.m., and closes on Friday, Aug. 7, at 5 p.m. With this election the city will have completed its transition to electing City Council members by district instead of citywide. With district elections, only those who live in a specific geographic area may vote for the City Council member representing that area. The mayor continues to be elected citywide.

One of the seats is for District 2, which includes the Terramar neighborhood to the west and extends east to the area around Palomar Airport, parts of Calavera Hills, Sunny Creek, Robertson Ranch, Rancho Carrillo and Sage Creek High School.

The other is for District 4 in the south, including the Ponto area to the west and extending east to La Costa and parts of Aviara.

To run for City Council, which is considered a part time position, candidates must be residents of their Districts and registered to vote in the City of Carlsbad at the time they submit their nomination papers. Nomination papers must include signatures from 20 Carlsbad registered voters. City Council members receive a base salary of $24,626 annually plus benefits.

The City Council consists of an elected mayor and four elected council members who serve staggered four-year terms. The mayor’s position, the other two City Council seats, the City Clerk and the City Treasurer will be up for election in 2022. City Council District 1 and District 3 were first up for election in 2018.

Those interested in running for City Council may make an appointment to pick up a candidate information packet in the Office of the City Clerk, 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive, Carlsbad, CA 92008. Call 760-434-2917 to make an appointment or for more information about the process and requirements for running for City Council.
