Carlsbad CA— Carlsbad officials marked the official beginning of the end of old Fire Station 2 in La Costa Tuesday, making way for a new station approved by Carlsbad voters in 2016. Built in 1969, before La Costa was officially part of the City of Carlsbad, the old, wood-shingled station no longer meets modern standards for fire and emergency medical services.
The old station was designed to fit smaller 1960s fire engines and house only one firefighter who responded to less than 250 annual calls for service.
Today the station has a crew of five and responds to more than 4,000 calls a year. The new station will accommodate up to five emergency response vehicles, including a 60-foot ladder truck, fire engine and an ambulance.
The new station will occupy the same footprint, but it will have about 7,000 more square feet, including room for modern fire equipment. It will incorporate public art and sustainable features, which help meet the goals of Carlsbad’s Climate Action Plan. The new features include:
- Energy-efficient electric, heating and cooling systems
- Solar voltaic panels
- Two EV charging stations for public use
- Drought-tolerant landscaping
- A solar hot water heater
- Low-energy-use LED lighting
Project timeline
Construction is expected to be completed in mid-2022.
Temporary fire station location
During construction the Fire Station 2 crew is working out of a nearby temporary station next to Dove Library. This location was chosen to provide the same level of coverage for the surrounding neighborhoods while the new station is being built.
