The Draft 2021 Regional Plan to be Discussed at a Series of Public Meetings

San Diego CA— SANDAG will host a series of virtual open houses in June for residents to learn more about the draft 2021 Regional Plan, the blueprint for land use and transportation planning in the San Diego region through 2050.
The draft 2021 Regional Plan will enhance quality of life for every San Diego County resident by making the region’s transportation system faster, fairer, and cleaner than ever before:

  • Faster by optimizing traffic flow and making transit more frequent and convenient
  • Fairer by improving social equity with expanded transportation options and access to job opportunities for historically underserved communities
  • Cleaner by meeting state and federal requirements related to climate change and clean air, investing in greener transportation options, and helping to implement local climate action plans and housing goals

“The draft 2021 Regional Plan outlines a roadmap to make it easier to get to work, school, and all the other destinations we know and love, while reducing harmful emissions that cause climate change,” said SANDAG Chair and Encinitas Mayor Catherine Blakespear. “Whether you drive, ride a bike, walk, or take transit, I encourage everyone in the region to get involved to help us create a plan that is faster, fairer, and cleaner for today and for future generations.”
Major benefits of the draft 2021 Regional Plan include:

  • Expanding convenient and reliable transit throughout the region by tripling the number of people within a half mile of transit, with even larger increases among people of color, seniors, and low-income individuals
  • Addressing traffic congestion by making more efficient use of the road and highway system through managed lanes and other strategies
  • Improving local roads and safety with investments that enhance local infrastructure and increase protections for people who walk and bike
  • Reducing carbon pollution and improving air quality by reducing per capita GHG emissions from cars and light duty trucks to 20% below 2005 levels by 2035, exceeding the region’s state mandated target of 19%
  • Equitably increasing access to jobs and education with faster and closer transit connections that allow more people to arrive at higher education destinations and major employment centers within 30 minutes

The SANDAG virtual open houses will give local residents the opportunity to ask questions, hear from SANDAG Board Members and staff about the benefits of the draft 2021 Regional Plan, how the plan was created, and next steps.
The informational open houses will be hosted on Zoom and registration is not required. Attendees are encouraged to join the meeting focused closest to their residence:
