Partnership supports work of the Franciscan Friars
Oceanside CA— Oppidan, a national property development firm headquartered in Minneapolis, Minn., and Harrison Street, a leading investment management firm exclusively focused on alternative real assets, today announced the development of The Hacienda Mission San Luis Rey, a luxury senior living community in Oceanside, California. Watermark Retirement Communities, a nationally recognized innovator in senior living, will operate the senior living community once complete.
The Hacienda Mission San Luis Rey marks the second senior living community for Oppidan and Watermark, which previously developed and recently completed The Watermark at Napa Valley in California. Oppidan has also developed six Pillars Senior Living Communities throughout Minnesota.
This new 256,000-square-foot senior living community will offer 213 apartments with independent living, assisted living and memory care options. The community will begin accepting residents in the second half of 2023. As part of Oppidan and Harrison Street’s partnership with Mission San Luis Rey, Friars will have the opportunity to reside at The Hacienda Mission San Luis Rey, allowing them to stay connected to the community they serve.
The groundbreaking ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, August 11, 2021, at 4050 Mission Ave in Oceanside, Calif.
Unique to this senior living community is its connection to the Mission San Luis Rey. Known as the “King of the Missions,” Mission San Luis Rey de Francia is the largest of the California Missions and was first settled by Native Americans and Franciscan Friars 223 years ago. The Mission was founded by the Franciscan Friars and was built with the help of the Luiseño people.
“The inspiration for this senior living community on the grounds of Mission San Luis Rey began 34 years ago and is a dream coming true,” said Fr. Anthony Garibaldi, OFM. “May this future senior living community promote life, nurture and dignity to all who will reside here.”
“We’re honored to work with the Mission San Luis Rey to fill a void for seniors living in the Oceanside area by providing exceptional senior housing options,” said Shannon Rusk, Oppidan Senior Vice President of Development. “We are continuing the Mission San Luis Rey’s more than 200-year-old ministry of caring for the community in such vital ways.”
Michael Gordon, Global Chief Investment Officer at Harrison Street, added, “Oceanside is a vibrant coastal California town, and we are pleased to deliver high-quality senior living in a high barrier to entry market tailored to the needs of the local community. Oppidan and Watermark are well respected leaders in their respective fields and we look forward to working closely with them to make this property a success for all stakeholders.”
The Hacienda Mission San Luis Rey will boast all the comforts of home, including ample indoor and outdoor spaces, exceptional dining options, arts and cultural spaces, and integrative health and wellness programs, including several outdoor fitness stations surrounding the property. Residents can enjoy relaxation and pampering in the salon and spa and outdoor fun in the pool, on the pickleball court or in the garden. The community will also feature a dog park, library and card room, virtual reality lounge and chapel.
“In introducing The Hacienda Mission San Luis Rey, Watermark is honored to be welcomed into an historic location and community. We look forward to being exceptional stewards and providing a fulfilling experience both for our residents and the 200-year-old Mission San Luis Rey ministry,” commented Bryan Schachter, Chief Investment Officer, Watermark Retirement Communities. “With this development, we are pleased to start our partnership with Harrison Street and expand our successful partnership with Oppidan, launching our second extraordinary senior living community together.”
The project’s general contractor is W.E. O’Neil and the architect is Douglas Pancake Architects.
