Carlsbad CA— The City of Carlsbad Independent Redistricting Commission will hold the second of four public hearings Saturday, Nov. 13, at 10 a.m. Residents are encouraged to provide input to the commission to help determine new City Council district boundaries.
The hearing will focus on the following topics, although members of the public are welcome to provide any input they feel is important to consider:
- What groups, neighborhoods and other “communities of interest” should be kept together for the purpose of electing a City Council member?
- How would you define the geographic boundaries of your neighborhood? This could be streets, the beach, railroad tracks, nearby open space or other physical borders. Would your neighbors agree? Why or why not?
- What do you like about how the current districts are laid out? What don’t you like? Why?
- What other considerations should the commission make when choosing a map?
In addition to the public hearing, the commission will hear a presentation about the current City Council district map and how it was chosen.
The City Council decided to appoint an Independent Redistricting Commission to choose new district boundaries. This means the City Council will not have a role in approving the new district map. The new district map must be approved by April 17, 2022.
To help limit the spread of COVID-19, the public hearing will be virtual. Instruction on how to watch and participate are included on the agenda. The hearing will also be livestreamed on the city website.
The commission is schedule to hold two more public hearings in addition to its regular meetings, which also have time for public input. See the schedule here.
Submit a draft map
Residents can also draw draft City Council district maps for consideration by the commission. The city has a few different mapping tools residents can use, including a paper map kit, Excel sheet and an online tool. The city is also preparing to launch a more sophisticated online tool that will be available soon.
