Poseidon Channelside selects earthwork contractor for 125-acre Otay River Estuary Restoration Project
Carlsbad CA— Poseidon Resources (Channelside) LP (“Poseidon”), owner and operator of the Claude “Bud” Lewis Carlsbad Desalination Plant selected Odin Construction Solutions to serve as the earthwork contractor for the Otay River Estuary Restoration Project at the San Diego Bay National Wildlife Refuge. This South San Diego Bay project, in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (“USFWS”), will create, restore and enhance 125 acres of coastal wetlands to benefit native fish, wildlife, and plant species, and provide habitat for migratory seabirds and shorebirds and salt marsh–dependent species.
“We’ve reached another critical milestone in advancing the Otay River Estuary Restoration Project,” said Andy Yuen, Project Leader for the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge Complex, part of the USFWS National Wildlife Refuge System. “Poseidon has been a dedicated and responsible partner in thoughtfully planning, designing, and implementing this project. Together, we look forward to delivering productive, natural habitat that will benefit the San Diego region for many future generations.”
Poseidon received a Coastal Development Permit from the California Coastal Commission for this restoration project in April 2021. Odin Construction Solutions, a California-based environmental remediation and geotechnical construction company, was selected for the earthwork portion of the project following a Request for Proposals process. Poseidon has worked to implement the project quickly, including pre-construction activities, design work, securing all other permits and planning for a comprehensive native plant revegetation program. Construction is estimated to be completed in late 2024.
“The Otay River Estuary Restoration Project’s continued momentum is a result of collaborative partnership with USFWS and the California Coastal Commission as well as a shared commitment to protecting natural resources,” said Sachin Chawla, President of Poseidon. “This project fulfills the vision of the San Diego Bay National Wildlife Refuge Comprehensive Conservation Plan, enhances the vitality of important ecosystems and contributes to the overall health of local wildlife and coastal habitats.”
The Otay River Estuary Restoration Project fulfills the applicable terms and conditions of the permits issued to Poseidon by the California Coastal Commission and San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board for the Carlsbad Desalination Project. Restoration is occurring at two locations within the Refuge: on approximately 34 acres located east of 13th Street near Imperial Beach within the Otay River Floodplain; and on approximately 91 acres at Pond 15, an existing solar salt pond, to the west of the intersection of Bay Boulevard and Palomar Street in the City of Chula Vista.
