Encinitas CA— Beacon’s Beach access in the Encinitas community of Leucadia remained closed this week after a bluff slide damaged the trail.
Sometime between the late evening of May 1 and the early morning of May 2, a previous landslide reactivated and and moved west down the slope, according to the city of Encinitas. No injuries were reported, but residents and visitors noticed the trail damage May 2.
“Early inspection on May 2nd appears to indicate that the landslide movement was slow, and that the movement has stopped,” the city reported. “In an abundance of caution, City geotechnical and engineering staff will monitor and evaluate the landslide area for potential future instability for the next 30 to 90 days.”
The parking lot and beach trail have been closed since the incident and will remain so until further notice, the city stated. Residents and visitors are being redirected to Stonesteps and Grandview beach access points.
The recent movement is related to a large landslide that occurred during heavy winter storms in 1982-83, which damaged stairways at the site. Additional movement was observed in 1990, according to the city, but there has been little movement detected since.
