Oceanside CA—San Diego County Commissioner on the Status of Women & Girls, Michelle Gomez seized the county Democratic Party’s endorsement for her candidacy in the District 5 County Supervisor race at Tuesday’s San Diego Democratic Party Central Committee meeting.
Gomez, a resident of Oceanside, is a long time community advocate who has dedicated the last two decades to serving the working families of North County in a variety of roles uplifting women, homeless children, veterans, and military families and by looking after the public health and well-being as a board member of several non-profit groups. For her service to the families of deployed Marines from Camp Pendleton, Gomez was awarded the President’s Volunteer Service Award four times by the Obama Administration.
“For me, community engagement isn’t a catchphrase,” says Gomez “It’s an honor and a privilege to be able to make a real difference in people’s lives.”
In addition to her history of community work, Gomez feels that her professional qualifications as a Legislative Analyst reviewing and educating on policy, and previous experience working in affordable housing project management give her a well-rounded understanding of how to confront the issues plaguing our county. It is this breadth and depth of experience, which Gomez feels will make her a dynamic County Supervisor and is the reason she won the local Democratic Party’s endorsement.
“The current trend of excessively hoarding county reserves has led us deeper into the statewide affordable housing crisis and is the root cause of the recent Hepatitis A outbreak. These type of problems are resolvable and avoidable, but we need a Board of Supervisors who will be diligent about solving them and forward thinking in their approach.” Gomez said when asked about her approach to solving the county’s primary issues.
The field of candidates in the District 5 Board of Supervisors race also includes Democrat Jaquelin Arsivaud a Board Member of the Elfin Forest Town Council, a 501c3 nonprofit corporation who failed to secure a qualified rating from the party for her candidacy. On the right, Oceanside City Councilmember Jerry Kern and San Marcos Mayor Jim Desmond, are both vying for a similar endorsement from the County Republican Party which will be voted on at an April 9, 2018 meeting.
