Solvang CA— The Alisal Guest Ranch & Resort, a 10,000-acre luxury dude ranch in California’s Santa Ynez Valley, hosts its spring bi-annual BBQ Bootcamp May 3-5, 2020. This spring, chef Hugh Mangum of Mighty Quinn’s BBQ and Food Network BBQ personality will join Paula Disbrowe, Valerie Gordon, and Bob Oswaks to share their expertise on all things BBQ from smoking meats to open fire desserts to bread baking. The four visiting chefs will join local Santa Maria BBQ legend Frank Ostini of the famed Hitching Post II and the Ranch’s own Executive Chef, Anthony Endy, as they serve up grilled feasts and reveal the tips and tricks for creating legendary BBQ.
Alisal will welcome Chef Hugh Mangum back to California, where he grew up among the diverse food culture of Los Angeles. After graduating from the French Culinary Institute in New York in 2001, Mangum worked in a range of restaurants including Jean Georges, Smoking Lil’s in Doylestown, PA, and Jules Thin Crust, an innovative pizza chain based in Pennsylvania.
All the while, Mangum was smoking meat as a side hustle and in 2011, Mangum introduced his slow-smoked creations to Brooklyn’s Smorgasburg food market as Mighty Quinn’s Barbeque, where he quickly understood the food’s broad appeal. In 2012, he opened the brand’s flagship eatery in Manhattan’s East Village, and now has 15 locations globally, including Dubai, Manila, and Taiwan. Mangum has also appeared on “Cook Like an Iron Chef” with Michael Symon, “Unique Eats,” “Chopped”, and “Beat Bobby Flay.”
“I’m super excited to get outside and gather around a fire at Alisa to talk all things food and cook some BBQ for everyone. I’ll be using smoke, live fire and maybe even throw a few curve balls. It’s gonna be a blast!” says Mangum.
As specialists in BBQ for over 60 years, Alisal’s signature culinary event offers guests an opportunity to learn about the region’s iconic Santa Maria grilling techniques, along with local wine and beer tastings. The itinerary features varied hands-on seminars and workshops including a smoking and grilling demonstration with Hugh Mangum, learning the art of Santa Maria BBQ from the master himself Frank Ostini, making desserts on the grill with Valerie Gordon, weeknight smoking techniques with Paula Disbrowe, a spice blending workshop, bread baking with Bob Oswaks, and more.
Guests will also participate in Alisal’s signature Breakfast Ride. The two-hour round-trip horseback ride transports guests through giant sycamores and Alisal’s 100-acre spring-fed lake to the historic Old Adobe Camp, where a crackling campfire and a hearty country breakfast prepared by Valerie Gordon and Chef Endy awaits.
