For the second year in a row, California State University San Marcos has been scored the safest four-year university in California in StateUniversity.com’s annual Safest Schools report, CSUSM officials announced.

“Student safety and campus crime are sometimes overlooked during the college evaluation process. We believe it is important for students to be aware of crime on campus and in the surrounding community,” StateUniversity.com founder Dominik Mazur said in a university news release.

StateUniversity.com’s 2012 School Safety Ratings are calculated from campus crime statistics as reported by 450 of the largest colleges and universities in the U.S., based on the number and type of campus crime reported during the year, according to the university. Each institution receives a safety score ranging from 0 to 100.

According to the CSUSM announcement, results posted at StateUniversity.com show that CSUSM tops all other California universities, and ranking seventh place when community colleges are considered, with an overall score of 95.33.

“We are proud to receive this distinction for the second year in a row,” CSUSM Chief of Police Robert McManus said in the news release. “This recognition is not a result of the University Police Department’s efforts alone but is a result of the entire campus community working together. Everyone plays an important part in making this the safest four-year university in California. It is a team effort and the entire campus community should be recognized for their efforts.”
