An Oceanside brush fire on Sunday, June 12, resulted in the evacuation of homes on Wala Road and nearby streets north of state Route 76.

The blaze, which began in the 800 block of West Airport Road, was contained to 80 acres, authorities reported. Full containment is expected by Tuesday afternoon.

Other than some burned fencing and possible outbuildings, no homes were lost in the fire, which was first reported at about 12:20 p.m., according to the Oceanside Fire Department. Firefighters were mopping up the fire by about 4 p.m.

Rivertree neighborhood residents on Wala Drive, Rimhurst Court and the north end of Shadow Tree Drive were asked to evacuate, the Fire Department reported. The Red Cross assisted 12 residents at a temporary shelter at El Camino High School.

The evacuation order was fully lifted by 7 p.m., the Oceanside Police Department stated.

The brush fire was the second to erupt near homes in Oceanside in a week.

Oceanside Fire Department units responded to a vegetation fire at San Luis Rey Drive near Interstate 5 and state Route 76 just after 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 8.

Firefighters accessed back yards to help douse the fire, which was in steep terrain, according to an incident report. The blaze was limited to about a quarter of an acre.

Both fires are under investigation.
