Vista-based BioFilm Inc. is on the path to being acquired by Combe Inc., nationally known for its Just For Men, Sea-Bond and Vagisil brands.

BioFilm is known for its Astroglide personal lubricant brand, developed by rocket scientist Daniel X. Wray in 1982. Combe expects to complete its purchase from the Wray family during the second quarter of this calendar year, according to a May 25 announcement.

“Sexual Health & Wellness is an important category for Combe, and Astroglide represents a powerful addition to our existing portfolio of leadership brands,” Combe Executive Chair Keech Combe Shetty said in a company news release. “Our mission has always been to serve the most personal personal care needs of our consumers, and Astroglide aligns perfectly with that mission.”

In addition to Astroglide, BioFilm produces BioShell oral antiseptic spray.

Lois Wray, co-founder and majority shareholder of BioFilm, noted the similarity between the companies as women-owned family firms.

“I am proud of the dynamic business my family and our team of amazing employees have built,” Wray said in the news release. “I am delighted to have our company be acquired by the Combe family. There is strong strategic and cultural alignment between our two entrepreneurial women-owned family enterprises, and this is a wonderful home for our business and brand.”

Combe Inc., based in White Plains, New York, is a third-generation, family-owned company that was founded in 1949. Biofilm was founded in 1991 and has headquarters in Vista.
