A man was killed when he fell into a lane of traffic while riding his newly purchased electric bicycle on Highway 101 in Solana Beach on Saturday, Feb. 26, authorities reported.

The 65-year-old man, who was not identified, was riding in a designated bike lane on northbound Highway 101 from Lomas Santa Fe Drive when he attempted to overtake a slower cyclist going in the same direction, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department. The e-bike began to wobble, and the man fell into traffic.

A slow-moving Dodge truck collided with the man when he fell into the lane, the Sheriff’s Department stated. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. Paramedics transported the e-bike rider to Scripps Hospital in La Jolla, where he later died.

Drugs or alcohol were not believed to be a factor in the accident, authorities said. An investigation is ongoing.
