A Look Back in Local History

NOTE FROM ME: This historical note was in my column of Dec. 4, 2004, in commemoration of the attack on Pearl Harbor and to honor veterans of three wars.
It was a special day one down at the San Diego Aerospace Museum with a “Day of Heroes” celebration commemorating the exploits of highly decorated military fliers from the eras of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.
A number of area Medal of Honor recipients and fighter aces will be on hand to participate in a symposium, followed by an autograph session.
Among the Medal of Honor recipients expected to be on hand will be: Thomas J. Hudner, Jr., U.S. Navy, (Korean War); James E. Swett, U.S. Marine Corps, (World War II); Patrick H. Brady, U.S. Army (Vietnam); and Leo K. Thorsness, U.S. Air Force (Vietnam).
Two Medal of Honor recipients who were cited for their heroism on the ground also will be on hand: Walter D. Ehlers, U.S. Army (World War II); and John W. Finn, U.S. Navy (World War II).
Aviation “aces,” (meaning they shot down five or more enemy aircraft), who will be on hand for today’s event include: Willis E. “Bill” Hardy, U.S. Navy (World War II); Everett C. Hargreaves, U.S. Navy (World War II); and Robert P. Winks, U.S. Army Air Corps (World War II).
I’ve lost track of these heroes, mostly of the Greatest Generation and of course the Baby Boom era of Vietnam as many are no longer with us, but never far from family memories.
