Whatever Happened To the ‘Correct Way’?

When I was in England not so many years ago, I had a tour guide give me a short tutorial about the British driving on the left side of the road. It had something to do with the cavalry being able to protect the king.
“You Americans drive on the ‘right’ side of the road, whereas we Brits drive on the ‘correct’ side of the road.
Be that as it may, when I was a young lad back in the Mid-West, we were taught to hike and/or ride our bikes “facing” traffic. Today, bike riders have to go with the flow. When did that change?
Bottom Line for Me: If I’m gonna get hit by a car or truck, I want to see what’s coming at me. Walking and riding facing traffic in the bike lane just make sense. One problem for bike riders, however, it would eliminate large groups of bike riders from taking up an entire lane of traffic while riding down the highway.
