The Difference in Today vs. Yesterday

My mother taught me about envy. “There are millions of less fortunate children in this world who don’t have wonderful parents like you do.” Or, “there are millions of starving children in Europe who would love to have what you’ve left on your plate. (Mine were in Europe after World War II — yours may have been in China).
And, Mom explained word anticipation: “Just wait until we get home.” Also, what to anticipate: “You’re going to get it when you get home!”
But, one thing I never have had explained to me — and, I’ve met hundreds of other people who have the same mystery to solve: “We’re going to save this for ‘good.’” (This refers to clothes and, especially, to that couch and chairs in the living room, which were never used).
But, we hardly ever “saw.” Remember when Mom replied to our pleading requests for treats or toys, “We’ll see.” Most of the time we never did see, but I don’t think that’s the case today. I fear most young requests today are granted and ‘we’ll see’ in years to come what that does to our emerging youth. I think my generation has ended up far better than later ones, but … we’ll see.
