Layla Marino June 27, 2016
Get ready for lots of outdoor fun this summer with lots of fun for the family. Everyone knows the fair and the races in Del Mar, but other fun in the sun is in no short supply on North County’s coast. When you have to take a little break indoors, don’t forget the world-class music, theater and culture this incredible region has to offer. Happy summer, North Coasters; it’s about time.

Cool on the Coast: April wraps up with street fair, music, relaxation

Layla Marino April 21, 2016
April is a very special month in San Diego County, especially on the North Coast. With the freshest local strawberries beginning to sprout and the Carlsbad flower fields in full bloom, there is nothing like spring on the coast. We must not forget, however, that there is also plenty of music and culture in our fair region as the weather warms up. Plays, music and, best of all, beer abound this month, so be sure to take a break from the beach and check out some of the North Coast’s world-class culture.

Cool on the Coast: Music, arts, nature spring to life in March

Layla Marino March 15, 2016
Though North County’s coast was expecting a much harsher winter, we’ve had sun, fun and sand throughout February. In March, indoor events rule the entertainment landscape. With lots of theater, lectures and music, the coast is staying cool even if the weather stays hot. Check out just a few of the activities available to “coasters” this month.

Review: Helmet could’ve been more solid in Belly Up performance

Layla Marino May 18, 2015

The 1990s indie/grunge band Helmet burst onto the scene in 1990 with a sound that was completely different from most of the alternative rock bands of the time. With fast, driving guitars and heavy, intense...

Review: Juliana Hatfield Three prove they deserve brighter spotlight

Layla Marino April 20, 2015

Even in the 1990s, a period in indie music when there weren’t a lot of limits, Juliana Hatfield checked too many boxes to adhere to just one alt rock genre. Then again, she seemed like the Groucho Marx...

Review: Dead Kennedys’ punk style alive and relevant in 2015

Layla Marino February 12, 2015

The Dead Kennedys are a punk band from the 1980s with near legendary status. From their iconic rune-inspired logo to the antics of frenetic frontman Jello Biafra, this loud, hardcore and marginally silly...

Cracker, Camper van Beethoven a perfect pairing at Belly Up

Layla Marino January 8, 2015

The Belly Up has done it again. You’d think this venue would be slowing down after having celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2014, but December saw another fabulous lineup of shows, parties and charity...

Layla Marino September 30, 2014

If the Buzzcocks show at the Belly Up in Solana Beach on Sept. 19 is anything to go by, punk rock is most certainly not dead. There is also, often, a worry with older bands on reunion tours as to whether...
