The cities of Carlsbad and Encinitas are experiencing the effects of district city council elections for the first time. This is particularly significant in Districts 1 and 3 of Carlsbad since all six candidates would be new faces on the City Council.
As two Encinitas governing bodies prepare to hold their first elections by district this November, candidates and other officials are weighing the issue of respecting defined community interests versus the broader regions they represent.
Encinitas residents can gain more information about the city’s plans to split council elections into districts at a workshop scheduled 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 7 at Cardiff Elementary School.
Following the receipt of a demand letter from Malibu law firm Shenkman & Hughes, the Encinitas City Council decided unanimously Aug. 30 to move forward with developing a districting process for the City Council election system.
